When it's time for your child's appointment, the hygienist and dentist will explain the process and discuss their oral health in language that is easy to understand.
They will take the time to answer any questions your child may have and ensure they are comfortable.
During the appointment, we will use a selection of techniques to manage any negative behaviour, based on parental expectations, treatment needs, patient history and behaviour.

- Cleanings & Checkups
Just like adults, children need regular dental checkups and cleanings every six months to help prevent problems from developing. This also helps to catch any problems that may have developed and treat them early.
- Monitoring Baby Teeth
Baby teeth allow children to eat and speak properly. They are important to children's healthy development, and help guide permanent adult teeth into the correct positions when they erupt.
Your child should have their first dental exam by the time they celebrate their first birthday.
Baby teeth should be properly taken care of until they are ready to fall out naturally and be replaced with adult teeth. Routine dental appointments can help preserve the health of your child's primary teeth.
- Fluoride Treatment
Fluoride is a dental treatment used to strengthen enamel in order to prevent cavities and tooth decay. At Affinity Dental Mayfield Common, we provide fluoride treatment for children to help protect their teeth and keep them strong.
- Dental Fillings
Kids can sometimes develop cavities even with careful brushing and flossing. We will look after a child's cavity in the same way we would for an adult.

- Dental Sealants
To help prevent cavities from developing in the first place, we may apply a coating of dental sealant to the molars and premolars. These teeth have deep grooves in them that can make them difficult for children to clean properly. Using sealants, we can cover the tooth so that plaque and bacteria aren't able to build up inside them.
- Early Orthodontic Treatment
If signs of misalignment begin to develop, the dentist may be able to intervene early enough to prevent it from getting worse. This could potentially reduce the need for more invasive orthodontic treatment when your child is older.
- Oral Hygiene Guidance
During each visit, the hygienist or dentist will review proper dental care techniques, including brushing and flossing, with your child. This ensures that your child's teeth are being cleaned well at home too.
